Cres

Cres 1

The largest settlement on the island of Cres is the town of Cres, situated in the northeast corner of the spacious and well-sheltered bay that abounds in lovely beaches. Ever since the antique period people lived here so everywhere one can stumble upon numerous monuments depicting the arrduous life of the people in this region.

Although there is evidence that it existed in the early Middle Ages, the town did not begin to develop properly until 15th century, when it took over the role of Osor, previous administrative center of the islands of Cres and Lošinj.

A typical Mediterranean city setup contains interesting buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries including two city gates, the clock tower, city lodge, the old granary and old Town Hall. The city gates are an integral part of the old fortifications, of which, unfortunately, there has not been much preserved.

The medieval port "mandrač" marks the today’s area with Gothic and Renaissance churches and monasteries, the remains of town walls and palaces of noble families. Until the end of Venetian rule Cres was located within the city walls, and outside its urban area there were only two monasteries. In the middle of the 19th century major changes occurred caused by the development of shipping and shipbuilding.

The town expanded along the coast towards the south and west. At the turn of the century Cres was providing accommodation at two hotels – Hotel Miramare and Hotel Excelsior. The intensive development of tourism began during the 60’s and 70’s of the last century.

Cres offers numerous possibilities for excursions. Particularly interesting are the visits to Valun and Beli. In Valun is the oldest known Croatian Glagolitic inscription from the 9th century (Valunska ploča) set on the sacristy wall of the parish church. In Beli there is Eco Center and near Beli there are two natural ornithological reserves of griffon vultures protected by law. The griffon vulture is one of the largest flying birds, has a wingspan of up to 2.80 meters and can weigh up to 15 kilos.
