The largest settlement on the island of Cres is the town of Cres, situated in the northeast corner of the spacious and well-sheltered bay that abounds in lovely beaches. Ever since the antique period people lived here so everywhere one can stumble upon numerous monuments depicting the arrduous life of the people in this region.
The medieval port "mandrač" marks the today’s area with Gothic and Renaissance churches and monasteries, the remains of town walls and palaces of noble families. Until the end of Venetian rule Cres was located within the city walls, and outside its urban area there were only two monasteries. In the middle of the 19th century major changes occurred caused by the development of shipping and shipbuilding.

The town expanded along the coast towards the south and west. At the turn of the century Cres was providing accommodation at two hotels – Hotel Miramare and Hotel Excelsior. The intensive development of tourism began during the 60’s and 70’s of the last century.
