On the shore of a narrow strait where Cres and Lošinj are the closest is a town whose glory was at its peak in the Roman period. In the distant past Cres and Lošinj formed one island and only by the construction of the artificial canal at Osor, probably in the Roman period, the two islands were formed. The foundations of the city walls reveal the ancient history whose traces date to prehistoric times, around the 9th century BC. In antiquity Osor was a significant and well-developed commercial city, which at one period of its prosperity had over 20,000 inhabitants.
The antique town square with beautiful buildings dated to the 15th and 16th centuries. The historic heart of this antique town forms the town hall with a covered loggia (now the City Museum), Bishop's Palace and the impressive cathedral with a lovely bell tower.
The whole town is actually an outdoor museum whose gardens and parks conceal traces of antique villas, Renaissance portals and monasteries.
It is worth to see:
The Town Museum - the former town hall, from the 15th century (with remains dating from the
Early Christian period, and earlier).
The Museum of Church Art in the former bishop’s palace.
The Archeological Collection of Osor.
The Cathedral, built between 1463 and 1498 (in a N-S direction). The main baroque altar had the
relics of St. Gaudentius, bishop and patron saint of Osor.
The town walls.
The antique floor mosaic in the church of St. Mary in the graveyard and the sexagonal baptismal
font from the 5th – 6th centuries.
The Osor Garden of Sculptures - ‘’Sculpture and Music’’.
