Sv. Jakov

Sveti Jakov (St. Jakob) is a small fishing village located on an elevation above the sea, in the north part of the island of Lošinj. It is the smallest settlement on the island. It is located about 2 km from Nerezine and 15 km from Mali Lošinj. Olive groves surround the village and the coast features sandy coves for pleasant swimming.

Sveti Jakov lies between two bays. The first, where the port is located, is called Studenac, named by the well of living water, where the cattle drank water from two ancient sarcophagi lids.

The village has two churches:

St. Jacob’s at the cemetery, a Romanesque church with an apse, which was increased in 1624 so that at its front a greater and wider nave was added. This date is engraved in Glagolithic letters Č H I G (=1624) on the marble slab at the top of the front.

The parish church of St. Mary was built in the 19th century, and the painting on the main altar, dated to the 19th century, depicts a Mother of the Rosary with St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Sienna and St. Jacob.
