The only thing I would love to see change is the homeless issue in and near Kirkwood. Kirkwood is filled with bars, restaurants, and fun shops and is right outside of the campus gates, making it extremely easy for students to access! However, there are an immense amount of homeless people in and surrounding this beautiful place, making students feel a bit unsafe at times.... Sororities and fraternities have been on the IU Bloomington campus since 1845. Almost 8,000 students at IU are members of the sorority and fraternity community, making up approximately 24% of the undergraduate student body.
When it comes to academics, the data shows that sororities tend to outperform fraternities. The average GPA since spring 2017 for all fraternities is 3.12 and for all sororities is 3.47. To put these numbers in context, the average GPA for men in the same time frame is 3.06 and for women is 3.34.
There are many advantages when it comes to joining a fraternity or sorority. Greek life is a great way to meet new people, gain leadership skills, and build lasting connections — and then there's also all the parties and events you'll be attending.
The study did note, however, that on average Greek-affiliated students had a GPA between 0.1 and 0.2 points higher than non-Greek students, but the researchers attributed this to the minimum GPA requirement.
To be eligible to join any sorority or fraternity at IU, you must complete the Prospective Member Orientation prior to being added to a chapter's roster and before beginning the new member education process. No exceptions will be made.
